Formed in 1965, by Art Neville, Zigaboo Modeliste, George Porter Jr. and Leo Nocentelli, The Meters' irresistible grooves helped to birth the genre of funk, which artists such as James Brown, Parliament-Funkadelic, Sly and the Family Stone and others took to the masses. Despite not reaching that same level of mainstream success, The Meters are seen as the band that paved the way for those icons, as well as inspiring artists from across the musical landscape. Across their career they have toured with The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney, been sampled by everyone from Run DMC to the Beastie Boys to Cypress Hill, and been covered by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Grateful Dead and Primus.
