Why see Weyes Blood?
stunning chamber-pop
The sublime alternative singer, songwriter and instrumentalist Weyes Blood is on tour across North America this spring, taking in an extensive run of shows following on from her latest album, "And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow", released in late 2022. The singer's rich voice is reminiscent of some of the great American folk and soft-rock singers such as Joni Mitchell and Karen Carpenter, but with her wide range of influences clear across her distinct sound which is hard to pigeon-hole, described variously as chamber-pop, psychedelic folk and experimental rock.
Raised in a heavily religious Pennsylvania family before becoming disillusioned, the singer, real-name Laura Mering, still describes church music as one of her biggest influences, along with a wild assortment of other genres including acts as varied as experimental noise group Wolf Eyes, Harry Nilsson and film scores such as Jaws. After playing bass in a Portland noise band, Mering released her first album under the Weyes Blood moniker in 2011. Her latest album rightly topped the Billboard Heatseeker chart, announcing her presence on the world stage.
